COMPANIONS
As our planet warms and the environment changes, life must adapt to survive. I imagine a world in which balance is restored and a diversity of life coexists. Within the environment of the painting is a microcosm rich in connectedness and belonging. Floating in a cosmic dance, there is a sense of hope or possibility for the future.
Sitting in quiet reflection in my studio, I gaze at the shadowy background of my paintings and envision fantastic flora and fauna. The central animal in each painting makes eye contact with me, sometimes reflecting a struggle or resilience. Once the connection is made, I begin to paint. I surround the figure with invented companions painted in silhouette, suggesting an absence or extinction or a future life form yet to evolve.
